    Welcome to the Himalaya — Paro to Thimphu

    Paro → Thimphu (≈55 km, 1.5 hrs)

    Touch down in Paro with mountain vistas all around. A gentle traditional welcome with the white scarf (khata) sets the tone before you wind toward Thimphu, pausing at the Chuzom confluence where three distinct chorten styles meet. Cross the iron-chain bridge to Tamchog Lhakhang, then rise to Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) for the commanding bronze Buddha overlooking the valley.

    Capital culture, takin & timeless dzongs

    Optional Tshewang blessing at 12th-century Changgangkha Lhakhang if you wish to join morning prayers. Meet Bhutan’s odd national mammal at the Takin Preserve, then weave through living heritage at the Textile Museum and Simply Bhutan. Pay quiet respects at the King’s Memorial Chorten and explore Trashichhoedzong — the fortress-monastery that still anchors government and monastic life.

    Over the ridge to Paro’s museum & dzong

    Descend toward Paro via Simtokha Dzong (1627), Bhutan’s oldest fortress. In Paro, spiral up to Ta Dzong — today’s National Museum — then stroll down to Rinpung Dzong’s painted galleries. Unwind with an optional traditional hot-stone bath at a farmhouse (paid locally) before a restful night in the valley.

    Tiger’s Nest & Kyichu’s ancient stones

    The highlight many travellers dream of: a full-day hike to Taktsang Monastery, clinging to cliffs roughly 900 m above the valley floor (allow around five hours round trip). Later, step into Kyichu Lhakhang, among the kingdom’s earliest temples, where prayer wheels still turn under old cypress trees.
